illy Reid felt his Hamilton side deserved their 1-0 Co-op Cup defeat at Raith Rovers on Tuesday, despite strong suspicions of an offside goal.
Mark Ferry forced home from close range in the 68th minute following a blocked shot from Gregory Tade, who appeared to be a yard ahead of the Hamilton defence when he was found by John Baird's pass.
But Accies failed to launch a sustained comeback and Tomas Cerny kept the score down when he saved Tade's late penalty, the fifth Hamilton have conceded in three games.
Reid, whose side have lost their opening two Scottish Premier League matches 4-0 against Aberdeen and Hearts, said: "I thought the best team won.
"There wasn't a lot in it first half but second half Tomas Cerny kept us in the game with two or three great saves.
"I've been told the goal was two yards offside, whether it was I don't know. But it doesn't matter, we didn't do enough to win the game.
"To get out-fought and out-battled isn't good enough."
Rovers manager John McGlynn felt his Irn-Bru First Division leaders were worthy winners of a hard-fought cup tie.
"I think over the piece we just deserved it," McGlynn said.
"Hamilton had chances too and they came here to kick-start their season and gave their all.
"It was a competitive game and we're delighted to be in the next round.
"We have had five wins in a row now so confidence is high."
The former Hearts coach was full or praise for his strike pair Tade and Baird.
"The two of them are a handful," McGlynn said.
"Gregory is very powerful and John is very good at linking up.
"They linked up well for the goal, obviously Mark Ferry has put it in.
"They do make it difficult for all defenders, including SPL defenders."
