Wesolowski targets World Cup call

By BBC Sport
Thursday, 18th February 2010
Wesolowski targets World Cup call.

Hamilton Accies midfielder James Wesolowski hopes that this weekend's encounter with Hearts leads him all the way to this year's World Cup finals. The Australian has been sidelined with a hamstring injury but should return against Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday.

Wesolowski has been linked with inclusion in the Australian squad and he is keen to to play in South Africa.

"If the chance ever does come, I'll be honoured and grateful to play for my country," said Wesolowski.

Along with Wesolowski, Accies captain Alex Neil should also return to the starting line-up against Hearts for Sunday's match.

Neil underwent hip surgery in the summer and, since his return to action, has suffered a series of niggling injuries that have prevented him appearing regularly for the the Lanarkshire side.

Injury-prone Wesolowski hopes to build up a string of appearances in Accies' Scottish Premier League run-in to impress the Australia head coach Pim Verbeek ahead of the World Cup Finals in South Africa this summer.

"It's one of those things I've always wanted to do in my career, but I know it's not going to be easy," said Wesolowski.

"It'll take a lot of work and me being injury-free as well.

"But I've had a small taste of it. I've been on the bench against Nigeria. Even that was a great experience and it pretty much drives you on.

"It shows, if you play well, you get the chances and hopefully I can do that."
